UK residential heating shifts toward low-carbon technologies
The United Kingdom is seeing a shift in residential heating strategies as the country transitions toward lower-carbon technologies. While approximately 85 per cent of UK households still rely on gas boilers, there is increasing pressure to adopt heat pumps due to changing regulations and energy performance requirements.
Experts note that successful low-carbon heating requires more than just installing a heat pump; it necessitates a holistic system design. This includes appropriately sized heat emitters, efficient pipework, and high-quality insulation to ensure the system operates effectively at lower flow temperatures. While heat pumps offer higher energy efficiency and lower carbon footprints, they often involve higher installation costs and may require home modifications compared to traditional gas boilers.
In the new-build sector, builders are also exploring alternatives to traditional wet underfloor heating. Electric underfloor heating mats are gaining popularity for smaller projects and compact homes because they are thinner, easier to install, and do not require the extensive pipework or thick screed associated with traditional systems.
