UK road safety: 400 work‑related deaths, drink‑drive deaths stay high

Data from the Department for Transport (DfT) show that in 2025 almost a third (29%) of all road deaths in Britain involved someone driving for work. The figures record 1,703 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) while travelling as part of work and 445 fatalities where the at‑work driver was at fault. By contrast, 4,757 non‑working casualties were killed or seriously injured in collisions that involved a working driver. Cars were the most common work‑related vehicle in injury collisions, followed by vans and buses.

Separate DfT statistics for 2024 indicate 220 drink‑drive fatalities, a 16% drop from the previous year but still 14% higher than a decade earlier. Overall road deaths and serious injuries fell 6% in 2024 to 1,740 people killed or seriously injured. Road safety groups such as the RAC and IAM RoadSmart say the proportion of fatalities involving drivers over the alcohol limit remains stubbornly high and call for stronger enforcement and new measures such as alcohol interlocks.
