UK rolls out new driving rules covering MOTs, fuel rates and senior driver tests

From 1 June 2026 the UK government has introduced a suite of driving‑related changes. Electric vans between 3.5‑4.25 tonnes are moved out of heavy‑vehicle testing, will follow Class 7 MOT rules and receive their first MOT three years after registration. The advisory fuel reimbursement rates for company‑car drivers rise to 14p‑26p per litre for petrol and diesel, while electric charge rates stay at 7p (home) and 15p (public). The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency also limits learner drivers to move their test only to the three nearest test centres starting 9 June.

In parallel, the Department for Transport is consulting on mandatory eyesight checks and cognitive assessments for drivers aged 70 and over. The proposals remain subject to parliamentary approval and could take months or years before becoming law. A spokesperson noted, “Vision is a critical component of safe driving and ensuring that older drivers can meet the minimum standards directly addresses a key factor in road safety.”
