UK Rugby Concussion Class Action Faces High Court Rulings

A high‑profile legal case over brain injuries claims by more than 1,000 former rugby league and union players is being heard in the High Court. The claimants allege serious neurological conditions and have sued governing bodies including World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union, the Welsh Rugby Union, the Rugby Football League and the British Amateur Rugby League Association.

Senior Master Jeremy Cook ruled in favour of the defendants, stating that the plaintiffs had not complied with an order to disclose all medical records related to the players’ neurological testing. As a result, the law firm Rylands Garth is stepping aside, while Leigh Day may take over the litigation. The judge indicated that up to 500 cases could be struck out unless the required documents are produced. A statement from the players thanked Rylands Garth for its work and expressed hope that a better‑resourced firm would continue the fight.

The case remains in the pre‑trial phase while the parties agree on a smaller group of claimants to be tested as representative cases.
