UK salmon suppliers adopt chicken-derived feed
Salmon suppliers for major British supermarkets are increasingly using feed containing chicken by-products to reduce costs and environmental impact. Norwegian seafood group Lerøy Seafood Group, a supplier for Tesco, has introduced poultry-derived ingredients into its fish feed, stating that the move helps reduce its carbon footprint and addresses the limited availability of marine raw materials.
Other producers are also transitioning to alternative ingredients. Grieg Seafood introduced chicken meal in July, and SalMar began testing poultry-based feed in March. The Global Salmon Initiative noted that using chicken by-products could reduce waste and ease pressure on wild fish stocks while maintaining nutritional value.
Industry representatives emphasize that all fish feed is strictly controlled and licensed by the Food Standards Agency. Retailers continue to work with suppliers to source sustainable ingredients that minimize the impact on wild-caught fish species.
