UK sanctions on Israeli settlements signal major policy shift
The United Kingdom is preparing to implement a sanctions regime targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Golan Heights. The Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu) has described the move as a “major reset” and a “transformation” of UK policy, noting the legal significance of Britain acknowledging the illegality of the occupation.
However, Caabu Director Chris Doyle warned that these measures are unlikely to deter Israeli settlement expansion or violence. While expressing belief in the government's determination to act, Doyle suggested that the Israeli government is unlikely to respond to such international pressure.
Historically, boycott campaigns against Israeli settlements and companies have seen mixed results. While some companies, such as Airbnb, briefly adjusted listings in the West Bank, others like Ben & Jerry’s saw their Israeli business transferred to local licensees following pressure. In the United States, 37 states have adopted measures against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, including restrictions on government contracts for participating companies.
