UK savers see rising interest rates as banks compete
UK savers are facing increased competition as financial institutions offer higher deposit rates. Regular savings accounts have become particularly competitive, with providers such as Lloyds and Santander offering rates as high as 8% for twelve-month periods. Additionally, easy-access accounts are reaching yields of up to 5%, while one-year fixed-rate bonds are averaging 4.22%.
Approximately 1,385 savings accounts currently offer rates above the Bank of England base rate of 3.75%, the highest number in over six years. Notable offerings include Revolut’s 5% promotional rate for new customers and Chase’s 4.5% easy-access account.
In a related discussion on consumer behavior, Vanguard UK head Ben Summers addressed the lack of investor confidence among British savers. Research from Vanguard suggests that while many individuals wish to invest, hesitation and uncertainty often prevent them from acting. Summers recommended strategies for newcomers to protect savings against inflation and advised existing investors on how to consolidate fragmented portfolios to reduce risk.
