UK security adviser warns Europe of winter hardship to maintain Russia sanctions

UK national security adviser Jonathan Powell has stated that Europe must prepare for “real hardship” this winter to maintain economic pressure on Russia. Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy forum in Kyiv, Powell argued that current strategies of supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions are working, suggesting that Russian escalation is a “sign of success” rather than a problem.

Powell advised against easing sanctions despite looming energy shortages across the continent. While describing President Vladimir Putin as a “terrorist,” he noted that the US and Europe should maintain contact with the Russian leader. He expressed optimism regarding the conflict, asserting that Ukraine has “already won” because Putin cannot seize the entire country, allowing a free Ukraine to remain in Europe.

The economic impact of the war remains severe. Ukraine’s Minister of Economy, Oleksandr Kravchenko, reported that Russian attacks on infrastructure are expected to cost $10 billion this year. Additionally, due to the blockade of sea ports affecting grain exports, Ukraine’s GDP is projected to contract by 1.5%.
