UK shop price inflation hits two-year high

UK shop price inflation has reached its highest level in two years, rising to 1.5% year-on-year in August, up from 0.9% in July. Data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and NIQ indicates that accelerating food costs and rising technology prices are driving this uptick.

Food inflation rose to 2.8% in August, compared to 2.2% in July. While fresh food inflation slowed slightly to 3%, ambient food prices increased by 2.5%. Experts attribute the rise in food costs to higher energy expenses in supply chains and the conclusion of summer promotional periods.

In the non-food sector, inflation reached a two-year high of 0.9%. This increase was largely driven by the rising cost of electrical products and technology, such as laptops. The surge is linked to the ongoing AI boom, which has created shortages and increased demand for memory chips and storage components.
