UK small businesses hit by violent attacks

A 44‑year‑old man was arrested after a hammer‑wielding attacker smashed the windows of Mohammed Miah’s Indian restaurant, Dining Room, in Birstall, Leicestershire on July 22. The incident left the proprietor and diners terrified and caused damage to the neighbouring shop, raising concerns about unexpected repair costs.

In a separate case, a shopkeeper in Bridgend, Wales suffered burns to her back and a bruised elbow after a violent robbery at a Spar store on May 28. The assailant, Carl Jubin, forced his way through the shop’s perspex door, pushed the store owner to the floor and stole a vape before being sentenced in Cardiff Crown Court.

Both incidents prompted police action: Leicestershire Police released a suspect on bail after the restaurant attack, while the Bridgend robbery led to a court conviction. The events highlight a rise in violent crime targeting small businesses across the United Kingdom.
