AI adoption accelerates globally amid rising investment and operational challenges
Global enterprise AI adoption is entering a phase of maturity characterized by rising investment and growing operational challenges. According to research from Alteryx, 80% of IT leaders expect AI spending to increase over the next two years, with 69% reporting moderate or significant ROI. However, a significant gap exists in operational readiness, as 53% of organizations struggle to translate business context into AI workflows.
In the UK, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly embracing the technology. Data from Capital on Tap shows that UK SME AI spending rose from 3.2% in Q2 2024 to 12.8% in Q2 2026, with mean average spending increasing from £93 to £288. While 66% of UK SMEs view AI as a growth engine, concerns regarding data security remain high, with 71% of executives prioritizing security over third-party tools.
In the United States, spending disparities are stark. The top 1% of businesses spend a median of $7,400 per employee monthly on AI, compared to a median of $11.95 for the broader market. Anthropic currently leads US business adoption with a 43.5% share of subscriptions or tokens on the Ramp platform.
As adoption accelerates, new challenges are emerging regarding governance, cost management, and infrastructure. Gartner reports that AI inference costs are projected to increase more than fivefold through 2028, while organizations face difficulties managing the transition from experimental pilots to autonomous, agentic AI systems.
