UK solar panel fires trigger safety investigations

A fire at the Springwood service of Malton Hospital in North Yorkshire on 8 July destroyed the building, prompting the evacuation of 15 patients without injuries. The incident follows three similar fires in English primary schools over the past year, leading the Suffolk authority to deactivate solar panels at around 80 schools as a precaution.

European officials released risk data showing that photovoltaic panel fires are extremely rare, with less than 0.01 % of installations causing a fire in Germany and the Netherlands. EU electricity consumption from solar is about 23 %, but only a tiny fraction of systems experience fire‑related damage, and most incidents involve localized equipment damage rather than structural collapse. Authorities attribute the recent UK cases to installation errors rather than component defects and recommend that only certified installers conduct work, that inverters be mounted on non‑combustible surfaces, and that regular maintenance checks be performed.

The data underscores that, while solar adoption continues to rise across Europe, the overall fire risk remains very low, and corrective measures focus on improving installation standards and oversight.
