UK spider mating season expected to increase indoor sightings

The annual spider mating season in the United Kingdom is expected to cause an increase in spider sightings within homes, garages, and sheds from early September through mid-October. During this period, male spiders typically move indoors in search of females.

While the UK is home to over 650 spider species, only 12 are considered potentially harmful to humans. Common visitors include money spiders, cellar spiders, lace web spiders, and house spiders. To deter spiders, experts suggest reducing clutter, increasing natural light, and using strong scents. Because spiders detect smells through their legs, essential oils such as peppermint, tea tree, citrus, and lavender can act as effective repellents when applied to window sills, corners, or ceilings. Other methods include using chalk lines to deter movement or boiling water with lemon, rosemary, and clove to create a natural surface spray.
