UK State Pension age petition seeks reduction to 65

A petition created by Michelle Gill is gaining thousands of signatures in an effort to lower the UK State Pension age to 65 for all citizens. The proposal seeks to reverse current legislative trends that are gradually increasing the retirement age.

Under existing rules, the State Pension age is 66 but is scheduled to rise to 67 in stages between 2026 and 2028, with a further increase to 68 planned for between 2044 and 2046. The petition argues that many individuals aged 65 to 67 face health challenges, caregiving duties, and limited employment opportunities, making the current trajectory unfair.

Proponents of the change suggest that lowering the age would allow people to retire with dignity and avoid financial hardship, while also potentially freeing up job opportunities for younger workers entering the labor market. If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the Government is required to respond; reaching 100,000 signatures would trigger a debate in Parliament.
