UK Statistics Authority faces scrutiny over data reliability and labour market trends

A parliamentary inquiry into the UK Statistics Authority has highlighted significant failures regarding the reliability of official economic data. The investigation follows the 2023 suspension of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Labour Force Survey due to data reliability concerns. Additionally, the ONS's Integrated Data Service was abandoned after nearly £230 million in spending. The inquiry raised questions about the effectiveness of the UK Statistics Authority Board in overseeing the ONS, though it maintained support for the principle of statistical independence.

Recent labour market data released by the ONS indicates headline stability, but analysts warn of underlying issues. The Learning and Work Institute noted that one million young people are currently not in education, employment, or training. Furthermore, job growth has stalled in private sectors such as retail and hospitality, which have seen a decrease of 150,000 payroll jobs over the past year. While the employment rate remains high by international standards, approximately 3.9 million people are currently not in work despite expressing a desire to do so.
