UK students show steady PISA rankings amid regional performance gaps

The latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results show steady performance for the United Kingdom in science, reading, and mathematics, though rankings vary significantly between the home nations. While the UK remains ahead of the US and Australia, it trails high-performing countries such as Singapore and Estonia.

England's performance consistently outpaced the other UK nations. In contrast, Wales recorded the steepest decline in reading and maths among the UK nations. Welsh pupils scored an average of 456 in maths and 459 in reading, trailing England's scores of 492 and 497, respectively. In science, Wales scored 476, compared to England's 516.

The OECD report also noted a global decline in teenage reading skills. In response to the findings, England's schools minister, Georgia Gould, stated the government aims to build on positive results to ensure strong literacy and numeracy. Welsh Education Minister Anna Brychan acknowledged the results are not ideal but noted that plans are in place to support schools and improve standards.
