UK sugar‑rationing study links early‑life sugar restriction to lower dementia risk

Researchers examined 64,737 participants from the UK Biobank who were born before, during and after the United Kingdom’s wartime sugar‑rationing programme (1940‑1953). The natural‑experiment design compared three groups: (1) exposure to rationing in utero and the first year of life, (2) exposure through the first two years, and (3) no exposure. After an average follow‑up of up to 15 years starting at age 55, those who experienced rationing in utero and the first year had a **21 % lower risk of all‑cause dementia**, while those whose first two years were under rationing had a **23 % lower risk** compared with the post‑rationing cohort. Early‑life sugar restriction also delayed dementia onset by **about 2.6 years**. Brain‑imaging of a subset showed **greater total grey‑matter volume** and **fewer white‑matter hyperintensities**, markers of healthier brain tissue. The study, led by Jiazhen Zheng of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, adjusted for age, sex, hypertension and diabetes and was published in the journal Neurology on 29 July 2026. Authors note the association does not prove causation but suggests that nutrition in the first 1,000 days may have long‑term brain‑health implications.
