UK study visa withdrawals rise amid stricter university compliance rules

UK study-visa withdrawals increased significantly during the first half of 2026, reaching an overall rate of 10.5% compared to 2.3% during the same period in 2025. The rise is particularly pronounced among applicants from Pakistan, where withdrawals hit 40.9%, and Nigeria, where they reached 22.7%.

Universities have cited the revocation of admission offers as a primary driver for these withdrawals. This trend follows new Home Office guidance implemented in June 2026, which requires sponsoring institutions to maintain visa-refusal rates below 5% and ensure at least 95% of students who receive visas actually enroll.

Under these tightened regulations, universities face significant licensing risks if they fail to meet compliance thresholds. Consequently, many institutions have increased pre-screening processes and pre-emptively withdrawn offers from regions with higher refusal rates to protect their sponsorship status.
