UK Supermarket Sales Grow as Heatwave and World Cup Promotions Spark Demand

Total till sales at UK supermarkets rose 4.6% in the four weeks to 13 June, up from a 4.2% gain in the previous month, according to NielsenIQ data. The increase was driven primarily by the May heatwave, which lifted grocery‑multiple sales by 6.3%, with unit growth of 2.5% and spend per visit up 2.3%.

Promotional spending rose to 25% of FMCG sales and reached 29% in the online channel, as retailers used price cuts and own‑label ranges to sustain demand. Own‑label sales grew three times faster than branded, with premium own‑label value up 9.1% and unit growth 6.2%. Online FMCG sales jumped 9.3%, making the online channel the fastest‑growing segment for 2026, helped by rapid‑delivery services reaching a 12.8% share on 26 May.

Category sales saw strong gains: suncare +70%, prepared salads +21% value, fresh dips +20% value, and frozen foods +9.4% (ice‑cream +34%). Drink categories rose 2.7% in value, with lager sales increasing £411 million (+7.9%). The World Cup also boosted interest in world cuisines, especially Japanese, Thai, Spanish and Mexican sauces. NielsenIQ’s Mike Watkins said, “The arrival of hot weather boosted demand for summer essentials, with suncare, ice‑cream and refreshment‑related categories among the fastest‑growing areas of grocery spend.”
