UK Supreme Court rejects Tesco equal pay appeal
The UK Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from Tesco regarding a long-running equal pay dispute involving more than 16,000 workers. This decision ensures the case will proceed to a full tribunal hearing using a methodology that relies on generic training documents to define comparable roles, rather than individual daily job duties.
The dispute centers on allegations that store workers, who are predominantly women, are underpaid compared to distribution center workers, who are mostly men. The potential financial liability for the retailer is significant, with some reports suggesting the broader litigation involving multiple supermarkets could be worth up to £4 billion.
Tesco is one of several major UK retailers facing similar legal challenges. Other companies, including Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, the Co-Op, and Next, are involved in comparable claims regarding gender-based pay disparities between different types of roles.
