UK tattoo ownership rises amid persistent workplace stigma
Tattoo ownership in the UK has risen to 24% as of July 2024, up from 21% in 2020, yet significant workplace stigma remains. While tattoos are increasingly common, acceptance is highly selective; approximately 41% of adults indicate that visible ink is only acceptable if it is not located on the face or neck.
Research from Liverpool John Moores University suggests that visible tattoos continue to carry negative connotations in professional settings. Many employers, particularly in customer-facing or conservative sectors, maintain dress code policies that restrict or prohibit tattoos, often using them as a metric for professionalism.
Some companies are shifting their policies to embrace more personal expression. Virgin Atlantic, for example, relaxed its visible tattoo rules in 2022. Following this change, the airline reported a 522% increase in job searches for cabin crew roles, suggesting that more inclusive appearance policies may improve recruitment and brand appeal.
