UK teachers demand legal classroom temperature limits amid heatwaves

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued updated guidance for schools and early years settings to manage heat-related risks. The guidance utilizes Heat-Health Alerts from the UKHSA and the Met Office, categorized into Yellow, Amber, and Red levels. Yellow alerts suggest managing risks for the most vulnerable, Amber alerts indicate risks to the wider population, and Red alerts signal significant health risks to the general public.

Despite these guidelines, teachers and education leaders are calling for the introduction of legal maximum temperature limits for classrooms. The demand follows record-breaking temperatures, including a June that reached 37.7°C. Educators have reported classroom temperatures exceeding 40°C, leading to heat exhaustion and migraines. The National Education Union (NEU) is urging the government to implement these limits to encourage investment in school resilience against rising temperatures.
