UK threatens Eritrean visa ban over migrant returns
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has threatened a complete ban on all Eritrean citizens entering the United Kingdom unless the East African nation agrees to accept the return of foreign national offenders and irregular migrants. The threat follows accusations from the UK government that Eritrea “abruptly” withdrew its cooperation regarding repatriation agreements earlier this year.
Immediate measures have already been implemented, including restrictions on the movement of Eritrean diplomats, who are now prohibited from traveling more than 60 kilometers outside of London without permission. Additionally, the UK has scrapped fast-track visa services and preferential processing for Eritrean VIPs. The Home Office stated these diplomatic restrictions mirror the limitations currently faced by British officials in Asmara.
Eritrea’s embassy in London has rejected the UK’s actions, labeling them a “perfunctory political gimmick” and accusing the UK of failing to engage in meaningful dialogue. The embassy also disputed the UK’s claims regarding the nature of returns, suggesting the UK has failed to disclose details regarding criminals still serving sentences.
Data from the Home Office indicates that Eritreans were the most common nationality among small boat arrivals in the 12 months leading to June, accounting for 18% of those arrivals. While the visa threat is significant, analysts note the immediate impact on legal travel may be limited, as Eritreans represent a very small fraction of total UK visa holders.
