UK to Ban TPO Nail Gel from August 2026

The United Kingdom is introducing a phased ban on nail‑gel products that contain the chemical Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO). Under updated UK and European cosmetics regulations, TPO has been reclassified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant, prompting its automatic prohibition from cosmetic formulas.

From 15 August 2026, manufacturers and importers may no longer place new batches of TPO‑containing gel on the UK market. All existing stock must be withdrawn from retail, wholesale and salon supply by 14 February 2027. The restriction applies to both professional salon treatments and at‑home gel nail kits. Industry bodies note that while TPO‑based gels are not intrinsically unsafe for normal use, toxicology studies on high oral doses in rats have driven the precautionary ban. Many UK nail brands are already reformulating their products to be TPO‑free, which may lead to changes in curing times or texture for consumers.
