UK to reopen refugee resettlement scheme prioritizing vulnerable groups

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced the reopening of the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) to provide safe and legal migration routes for vulnerable refugees. Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Mahmood emphasized that the initiative aims to fulfill international obligations while maintaining controlled borders through annual caps.

The program will be conducted in partnership with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP). The Home Office expects that approximately 25% of those resettled will be Palestinian refugees and women and girls from Afghanistan. Other priority groups include individuals with disabilities and survivors of torture.

Initially, the scheme is expected to welcome hundreds of applicants, with the potential to expand to the low thousands as irregular migration via small boats decreases. Additionally, the government is introducing three new community sponsorship routes involving universities, companies, and local communities, with the first arrivals expected within a year. Refugees admitted through these legal pathways will be granted a five-year route to permanent settlement.
