UK to provide defensive military support to Saudi Arabia
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has authorized the first military deployment of his premiership, agreeing to provide defensive military support to Saudi Arabia. The assistance, which is expected to begin in the coming days, will involve the Royal Air Force providing air-to-air refueling for Saudi aircraft using a single RAF Voyager tanker.
The decision follows a formal request from Riyadh in response to escalating attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Houthis have intensified drone and missile strikes targeting Saudi cities, including Riyadh, and have declared a blockade on shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The rebels have also made territorial gains in Yemen, seizing the port of Mokha and key islands.
Burnham stated the mission is strictly defensive and intended to protect vital energy supplies, trade routes, and regional stability. The deployment is expected to be time-limited, lasting for several weeks, and will be kept under continuous review. This move follows the earlier deployment of the UK's Sky Sabre air defence system to Saudi Arabia.
