UK Trade Deficit Widens as US Deficit Narrows in April 2026

The United Kingdom’s goods and services trade deficit grew by £7.7 billion to £39.9 billion in the three months to April 2026, driven by a 2.6 % rise in exports and a 1.5 % rise in imports, with fuel and machinery shipments playing key roles. Exports of machinery and transport equipment increased, while higher fuel imports from the EU contributed to the larger goods deficit.

In the United States, the overall goods and services trade deficit narrowed to $55.9 billion in April 2026, a $700 million improvement from March. Exports reached a record $327.1 billion, led by capital goods, computers and civilian aircraft, while imports rose to $383.0 billion, driven by capital goods and semiconductors. The US trade balance with major partners also shifted, with a narrower deficit with China and a surplus with the European Union.

Both countries reported stronger export performance alongside rising import demand, reflecting robust external trade activity but divergent impacts on their trade gaps.
