UK Transport Secretary Andy Burnham launches £1 summer train tickets for children
Transport Secretary Andy Burnham announced a £1 off‑peak fare for children under 16 on state‑owned rail services as part of the Great British Summer Savings programme. The scheme, rolled out over the coming weeks, applies to operators such as Southeastern, Thameslink, c2c, Greater Anglia, LNER, Northern and Trans‑Pennine Express. It is presented as a cost‑of‑living measure to encourage family travel, though ministers said the policy is unfunded and will rely on increased ridership or reallocation of other budget items. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander acknowledged that funding details are still being worked out.
