UK travel warnings issued after Spain wildfires kill British couple

Wildfires in Spain's Almería province have killed at least 13 people, including British couple Pete and Fran Gillam, whose family described their loss as "heartbreaking". The fire broke out near Los Gallardos, spreading across roughly 7,000 hectares amid temperatures exceeding 40 °C, and contributed to over 1,000 excess deaths across Spain.

In response, the UK Foreign Office updated its travel advice, issuing wildfire warnings for popular holiday destinations in Turkey, Italy and Cyprus. British travellers are urged to follow local authority instructions, register mobile phones for emergency alerts, and call emergency numbers (112) if needed. The guidance also reiterates support services for those affected by the Spanish fires, including consular assistance and a helpline for psychological support.
