UK universities expand biomedical and healthcare research training
The University of Essex has opened the Bioscience Skills Training and Research Laboratory (BioSTAR-Lab), a £2.5 million facility funded by the Office for Students. The lab is designed to provide biomedical, biotechnology, and cancer biology students with hands-on experience in microbiology, molecular biology, and cancer diagnostics to prepare them for roles in the NHS and the life sciences sector.
Coinciding with this opening, the university is launching its first undergraduate biotechnology degree to meet the growing demand for skilled graduates in vaccine and medicine development.
Separately, the University of Manchester, in collaboration with the Universities of Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Sheffield, has secured renewed funding for the Forward North doctoral programme. This initiative provides doctoral training fellowships and pre-doctoral opportunities to support healthcare professionals in transitioning into research leadership roles over the next five years.
