UK voters show growing support for rejoining the EU, poll finds

A major poll conducted by the Messina Group (TMG) reveals that nearly half of British voters, specifically 49%, support the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union. The survey, which sampled over 11,000 individuals between September 12 and 24, also indicates a significant shift in public sentiment regarding Brexit. Approximately 52.4% of respondents believe the decision to leave the EU was a mistake, while 54.9% characterize the Brexit process as a failure.

These findings coincide with Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s recent statements indicating that the government is reviewing all options for the UK’s future relationship with the EU. This review includes potential re-entry, joining the single market, or entering a customs union. The poll suggests that renegotiating the UK’s relationship could potentially increase the Labour Party’s vote share by up to seven points, provided a new referendum is offered.

Despite the polling data, there is internal tension within the Labour government. Some ministers have expressed concerns that revisiting the Brexit issue could reignite the deep political divisions that characterized the 2016 referendum, particularly in constituencies that voted to leave the bloc.
