UK water pollution concerns rise as hundreds report illness after swimming

Widespread reports of illness have emerged among swimmers in UK waters, with hundreds of people reporting symptoms such as gastroenteritis and ear infections. The marine charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) has recorded 765 reports of illness across 406 locations in the UK since the start of the year, with a significant spike occurring during the spring and summer months.

In the Dartington and Totnes areas, families have reported severe vomiting and diarrhoea after swimming in the river. Environment Agency sampling at Steamer Quay in Totnes showed that eight of the first 13 samples exceeded 500 E. coli colonies per 100ml, with four readings surpassing 900 colonies per 100ml, indicating a high risk to bathers.

Campaigners have criticized water companies for sewage discharges, noting that illnesses have been reported even at Blue Flag designated beaches. While South West Water stated that samples at Stoke Gabriel meet excellent standards and no storm overflows were recorded there, local community groups like Friends of the Dart have raised concerns regarding pharmaceutical chemicals and the limitations of standard bacterial testing, which may not account for all forms of pollution.
