UK water quality initiatives see infrastructure upgrades and citizen science efforts

United Utilities has reached a major construction milestone in a £17m project to improve water quality in the Manchester Ship Canal. The upgrades at the Warrington South wastewater treatment facility involve the integration of Mobile Organic Biofilm (MOB) technology, one of the first applications of this type in the UK. The technology uses naturally occurring bacteria to break down waste more effectively, increasing production capacity and treating approximately 150 litres of water per second.

In Yorkshire, recent citizen science efforts have highlighted ongoing challenges with river health. During the Great UK WaterBlitz, volunteers collected nearly 200 samples across the Derwent and Aire catchments. The results indicated that while 60% of samples achieved a good nutrient rating, almost 25% were classified as poor due to elevated levels of nitrates and phosphates. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is calling for more volunteers to continue monitoring these catchments to better understand pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development.
