UK wildfire emergency alert sparks domestic abuse safety concerns
A UK government emergency alert sent to millions of mobile phones on Friday evening regarding wildfire risks has drawn criticism from domestic abuse charities. Campaigners, including Women's Aid and Hourglass, warned that the unannounced alert could endanger survivors who rely on concealed second phones to seek support or escape abusive situations.
Veronica Oakeshott of Women's Aid emphasized that keeping such devices hidden is vital for safety, while Maggie Evans of Hourglass called for ministers to consult frontline organizations and provide targeted safety guidance before issuing future alerts. The government stated the message was sent at the request of fire and rescue services to caution against using naked flames, fireworks, or disposable barbecues during a period of high wildfire risk.
The alert follows significant wildfire activity across the country, including an incident in Stourbridge that destroyed 19 homes and multiple major incidents requiring military assistance. Officials noted the notification represented the most extensive use of the UK's mobile phone alert system to date.
