UK Wildfire from Disposable Barbecue Triggers Road Closure and Retail Ban Call

A wildfire broke out on the heathland of Cannock Chase in the West Midlands after a disposable barbecue was used, prompting Staffordshire County Council to close Chase Road until at least 3 August. The fire, described as "large," scorched a Site of Special Scientific Interest the size of a football field, killed reptiles and amphibians, and required crews from Staffordshire and West Midlands fire services to dampen hotspots.

In response to a series of recent blazes across England and Wales, MP Jon Pearce of High Peak wrote to major retailers urging them to stop selling disposable barbecues for the remainder of the summer. He highlighted the drought‑affected conditions and the growing risk of wildfires, calling for a ban on their use in public spaces. Following his letter, retailers including Co‑op and Sainsbury’s pledged to halt sales nationwide, joining others that had already removed the items from shelves.

The incidents underscore heightened concerns about fire risk during an unusually dry July, with fire chiefs warning that such wildfires are becoming a recurring feature of community safety challenges.
