UK Winter Fuel Payment: Eligibility and opt-out deadlines

More than nine million pensioners in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are eligible to receive between £100 and £300 through the government’s winter fuel payment scheme for the 2026 to 2027 period. The payments are intended to assist with heating costs during colder months and are scheduled to be distributed automatically in November or December.

Under current rules, pensioners with a total income exceeding £35,000 who receive the payment will have the funds recovered by HMRC through the tax system. Consequently, those wishing to opt out of the payment must meet specific deadlines to avoid tax implications. To opt out, individuals can use the ‘Manage your State Pension’ service or an online form by September 20, 2026, or contact the helpline by September 18, 2026.

Eligibility is restricted based on several criteria. Those living outside England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, individuals in hospital for a full week in September, or those in prison during the week of September 21 to 27, 2026, are ineligible. Additionally, certain care home residents receiving universal credit, pension credit, or ESA who have lived in a care home full-time since June 29 may not qualify. Opting out does not affect the recipient's State Pension, and once opted out, the status remains in effect for future years unless the individual chooses to opt back in by March 31, 2027.
