UK Winter Fuel Payment eligibility rules for 2026

More than nine million pensioners in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are eligible to receive between £100 and £300 through the government’s Winter Fuel Payment scheme to assist with heating costs for the 2026 to 2027 winter.

Eligibility is primarily restricted to those born on or before June 27, 1960. However, several groups are excluded from receiving the payment. These include individuals living in Scotland, where separate benefits apply, and those living outside England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Additionally, individuals who were in the hospital or in prison for the entire qualifying week of September 21 to September 27, 2026, are ineligible. Those subject to immigration restrictions that prohibit claiming public funds are also excluded.

Regarding care home residents, eligibility depends on specific circumstances; those receiving universal credit, pension credit, or ESA who have lived in a care home full-time since June 29 or earlier may not qualify. Furthermore, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) notes that if an individual's total income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim the payment. For those affected by these income rules, HMRC is adjusting tax codes to recover the funds through the PAYE system, resulting in monthly deductions of approximately £17 for those under 80 and £25 for those aged 80 or over.
