UK Youth Employment Gap Deepens as Work Experience Declines

Young people in the United Kingdom are increasingly classified as NEET (not in education, employment or training). A town council in Stroud notes that part‑time Saturday jobs and work‑experience placements have fallen sharply over the past 25 years, reducing opportunities for 16‑17‑year‑olds to gain skills and income. The decline mirrors a national trend highlighted in the UK Government’s May 2026 interim report, which estimates nearly one million NEETs, a figure that is still rising.

The shortage of entry‑level roles and apprenticeships is straining Welsh businesses, which face skills gaps and recruitment difficulties. Existing programmes such as Jobs Growth Wales+ have helped some young people, but gaps remain. The Welsh Government’s forthcoming Employability Support Programme (set for March 2027) aims to align skills development, health support and employer engagement to reduce economic inactivity and restore a pipeline of work‑ready talent.
