UK youth favor electric vehicles over gasoline models

A study conducted by E.ON Next among 1,500 young people aged 17 to 20 in the United Kingdom reveals a significant shift in attitudes toward automotive technology. The research indicates that 55% of these potential new drivers want their first vehicle to be fully electric.

Approximately 23% of respondents compared owning a gasoline-powered car to using a landline telephone, viewing it as an outdated technology. Furthermore, 21% of those surveyed stated they cannot imagine driving a gasoline car at any point in their lives, while 24% said they would not purchase a new gasoline or diesel vehicle.

The study highlights that cost (20%) and the ability to charge at home (19%) are primary drivers for this preference. While the shift toward electric vehicles is prominent, the research also noted that many young drivers express anxiety regarding basic vehicle maintenance, such as changing a tire or jump-starting a dead battery.
