UK youth NEET numbers fall below one million
The number of young people in the United Kingdom not in education, employment, or training (NEET) fell to an estimated 981,000 for the period of April to June 2026. This represents 13% of the 16 to 24 age group, a decrease from 1,012,000 in the previous quarter, though the figure remains 30,000 higher than the same period last year.
Data from the Office for National Statistics indicates that the quarterly decline was largely driven by a reduction in economic inactivity. Of the total NEET population, 588,000 were classified as economically inactive, while 393,000 were unemployed. The annual increase in NEET numbers has been notably driven by young men, whose numbers rose by 25,000 to a total of 530,000.
In response, the UK Government is implementing a £2.5 billion initiative to address youth unemployment, which includes an expanded Youth Jobs Guarantee scheme. This program aims to create 90,000 jobs by 2029 and provides employers with incentives such as £2,000 per hire. However, experts and industry leaders have warned that structural issues, including a 49% decline in entry-level starter jobs over the last decade and rising employment costs, continue to pose significant challenges to the youth labor market.
