UK youth NEET numbers fall to 981,000 amid automation concerns

The number of young people in the UK not in employment, education, or training (NEET) fell to 981,000 in the second quarter of 2026, down from 1.011 million in the previous quarter. Despite this slight decrease, the figure remains high, representing 13.0% of the 16-24 age group.

Several factors are contributing to challenges in youth employment. A report by the Work Foundation indicates that nearly half of medium and large firms have fewer vacancies for young people compared to last year, citing the increased use of artificial intelligence and automation. Additionally, the Confederation of British Industry noted that higher employment taxes have reduced the willingness of firms to hire.

There are also concerns regarding the recruitment process itself. While AI can assist with logistics and removing bias by stripping personal details from applications, critics argue that over-reliance on automated tools and virtual interviews may prevent young candidates from demonstrating personality and passion. Work and pensions minister Pat McFadden stated that addressing youth inactivity is a priority, highlighting new work experience placements for the long-term unemployed.
