UK youth trust AI over humans for information in new study

A study conducted in the United Kingdom involving over 4,000 young people aged 11 to 24 reveals a significant shift in trust toward artificial intelligence. According to a report co-authored by Sir Anthony Seldon and entrepreneur Tim Bunting, 87% of participants actively use AI tools, and 47% stated they would trust AI over a human for information verification.

The findings suggest that educational institutions are facing a “validity crisis” as they struggle to adapt to the rapid advancement of technology. The report notes that 63% of middle school students use AI for homework, while 77% use it to understand difficult topics. Despite this high level of integration, fewer than 10% of students believe their schools or universities are adequately preparing them for a future shaped by AI.

Experts criticize current educational approaches for treating AI as a temporary threat to be bypassed rather than a fundamental reality. The report warns that schools are still teaching for a “world without AI” that no longer exists, potentially leading to a loss of institutional authority and legitimacy if curriculum updates do not keep pace with technological developments.
