UK youth unemployment hits 1 million as Labour policies face criticism

Around one million 16‑ to 24‑year‑olds in the United Kingdom are currently not in employment, education or training, according to the Milburn review. The report warns that the number could rise further, highlighting a decline in apprenticeships and entry‑level jobs.

Labour officials, including Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Pat McFadden, have been criticised for focusing on raising taxes to fund welfare spending rather than creating opportunities for young people. A recent National Insurance increase on employees has raised hiring costs for businesses, especially small firms in regions such as South‑West Devon, leading to concerns that higher taxes and regulation are dampening recruitment of youth.

Opposition parties argue that lower taxes, reduced red tape and a renewed emphasis on apprenticeships would better support both employers and job‑seeking young people, preventing the emergence of a “lost generation”.
