Učka Cable Car Project Stalls After 18 Years, Cost Estimate €69 million

After 18 years of planning, the Učka cable car project in the Matulji municipality remains stalled. Milorad Stanić, a board member of Žičara Učka d.d., told the municipal council that the accumulated documentation is four metres high and that completing the line would likely cost about €69 million. The company, whose shareholders include the Municipality of Matulji along with several other local authorities and individuals, has a share capital of €557,700. Stanić admitted the project has “lost its rhythm” and noted that no substantive discussion took place during the council meeting. The delay is part of broader municipal reports on infrastructure, water supply, and public transport, but the cable car remains a pending strategic development for the wider Liburnian region.
