UKC Maribor doctors warn of systemic healthcare failures
Eighteen specialist doctors at the UKC Maribor Emergency Center have issued a public warning regarding critical systemic failures. The doctors highlighted severe staffing shortages, a lack of hospital beds, and employee burnout as primary concerns. They also noted that the center is frequently burdened by patients who no longer require emergency care but lack appropriate follow-up facilities.
These warnings follow the resignation of the department head, Gregor Prosen. In response, the Ministry of Health stated it is taking the warnings seriously and has established a professional working group to address systemic solutions. The group will focus on reorganizing work processes, improving staffing sustainability, and better connecting emergency centers with pre-hospital care and other healthcare sectors to ensure patient safety and appropriate working conditions.
