Uki City schools reopen following Kumamoto earthquake

In Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, elementary and junior high schools have officially reopened following the Kumamoto earthquake that occurred over a month ago. At Matsubase Elementary School, some students attended classes by traveling from nearby evacuation shelters.

To manage the heat, the school held its general assembly remotely. Principal Naoko Noda addressed the students, emphasizing that school is a place where they can find support from friends and teachers. To support the emotional well-being of the children, the school has scheduled one-on-one sessions between teachers and students over a three-day period to help them process the trauma of the disaster.
