Ukraine Operation Vivaldi retakes territory near Lyman
The Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps, led by Brig. Gen. Andriy Biletsky, has conducted Operation Vivaldi to counter Russian attempts to encircle Ukraine’s fortress belt in the Donetsk region. The operation, which has been carried out in near silence for months, aimed to disrupt Russian advances toward the strategic Lyman area.
Ukrainian officials report that the operation has resulted in the recovery of between 140 and 176 square kilometers of territory. While the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) provides a lower figure based on geolocated gains, it notes that much of the advance may have occurred earlier without being reported. The operation successfully broke the northern arm of a Russian pincer movement, preventing a potential encirclement of cities like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
In addition to territorial shifts, a NATO official estimated that Russian forces suffered over 50,000 casualties, including killed and wounded, during September. During the same period, the ISW reported that Russia experienced a net loss of approximately 81 square kilometers.
