Ukraine agricultural sector faces crisis from Russian attacks on Odessa port

Russian military attacks on Ukrainian agricultural and logistical infrastructure are causing severe disruptions to food supplies and the national economy. Attacks on the port of Odessa have led to a more than 90 percent drop in weekly shipments of grains and oilseeds since early July.

Farmers are facing financial collapse as storage capacities reach their limits and export routes remain blocked. Producers are often forced to sell harvests on the domestic market for approximately one-third of international prices. In regions like Kharkiv, there are warnings that the loss of current harvests could lead to widespread bankruptcies and the forced sale of land.

The disruption extends to fresh produce, with reports indicating that items such as broccoli, onions, and carrots are becoming unavailable in certain markets due to strikes on distribution centers. Furthermore, the instability has caused shipping companies to halt voyages to Ukrainian ports, despite the technical existence of a Black Sea grain corridor.

These developments pose a significant threat to global food security, particularly for developing nations that rely on Ukrainian wheat purchased by organizations like the FAO. The agricultural sector represents over 50 percent of Ukraine's total export earnings, making the current instability a critical economic and humanitarian concern.
