Ukraine faces rising jet-powered drone attacks amid missile shortages
Ukraine is facing an intensified aerial campaign as Russia increases the deployment of jet-powered Geran drones. Reports indicate that the use of these faster drones rose from 350 in June to 2,800 in August, making them significantly harder for existing air defenses to intercept. While these drones are faster than previous models, they currently lack the range and warhead capacity of traditional cruise missiles.
To counter these threats, Ukraine is struggling with a critical shortage of Patriot missile interceptors. The high cost of these missiles and the slow production rates in the US, Japan, and Germany—totaling roughly 900 units per year—have left gaps in the defense of key regions. Furthermore, the use of Chinese-sourced components in Russian weaponry has been noted as a violation of international sanctions.
In response, Ukraine is advancing its own drone technology. The FP1 drone, developed by Firepoint, has demonstrated the ability to strike deep into Russian territory, such as the Yamalo-Nenets region. These drones utilize AI to navigate via terrain matching when GPS signals are jammed, and can be modified with extra fuel tanks to extend their range to approximately 2,600 kilometers.
