Saxony-Anhalt: AfD and BSW pass motion on Ukraine aid

In the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, the AfD and BSW parties have formed a new cooperation to pass a symbolic motion titled ‘Peace talks instead of escalation of the war in Ukraine’. The motion calls for an immediate ceasefire, the resumption of peace negotiations with Russia, an end to military and financial aid to Ukraine, and the lifting of economic sanctions against Russia. While the motion has no direct impact on federal foreign policy, it signals a significant shift in the regional political landscape.

In response to the potential election of AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund as Minister President, the CDU parliamentary group has decided to collectively leave the plenary hall during the first two rounds of voting. This boycott aims to prevent speculation regarding secret support for the AfD following the election of Tobias Rausch as parliament president. The CDU maintains that this action upholds their election promise to not cooperate with the AfD, while critics, including members of the SPD, have described the move as a threat to democratic processes.
